Kon-Tiki

Kon-Tiki

On the 28th of April 1947, Norwegian anthropologist and adventurer Thor Heyerdahl left his wife and children behind to cross the Pacific Ocean on a balsa wood raft called "Kon-Tiki" with five inexperienced crew members. The voyage took them from Peru to Polynesia to prove that the Polynesian islands were populated, in part, by people from South American instead of from Asia, as was believed at the time. The crew did not pack any modern technology except for a simple radio, and were accompanied only by each other and a parrot. With the world media watching, the Kon-Tiki crossed the Pacific Ocean using the stars, being driven by the currents and wind, and braving thunder storms, sharks and all the dangers of the open sea.
